Photographs of the Pyramids at Giza on 4 March 1862

This photograph was taken by Francis Bedford (1816–94) during the educational journey of King Edward VII (when Prince of Wales) to Palestine and the Near East. It shows the Prince and his entourage on dromedaries and camels in front of the Pyramids at Giza on 4 March 1862. The Prince wrote in his diary, ‘We then proceeded on the dromedaries (not at all an unpleasant mode of conveyance) to the celebrated Pyramids of Ghizeh – They quite exceeded my expectations…We had a charming little encampment just below the Pyramids where we slept for the night’.

(Scout hat, with a fleur de lys badge bearing the motto ‘Be Prepared’, belonged to King George VI.)
